Did you try downloading and installing the prebuilt VMware instead of loading from an ISO?

Most likely not a problem in Kali. VMware Player and Workstation are known to always having issues with newer Kernel versions like shipped in Kali and support for newer Kernels are always lacking behind weeks or even months:
