Summary0008222: Kali Purple ISO does not boot on VM in vSphere 7.0u2
Description

The ISO when attached to the VM as a Datastore ISO does not boot in a new VM. I checked that the hash matched the Kali Linux Purple ISO on the vmware side and it did.

Steps To Reproduce

1.) Upload ISO to Datastore
2.) Create new virtual machine:

  • Selected Linux Other 5.x as Machine type
  • Left other settings unmodified except for changing the amount of RAM / CPU and Disk space to required settings.
  • Attached the ISO to the CDROM device on the virtual machine, set it as connected and for it to connect on VM startup.
3.) Boot the VM and try to boot from ISO.
    4.) Bootable media undetected.

Thanks for the report.

So I don't have any experience with VMware, and no access to any of these VMware sphere/ESXI things. I checked with the team, it seems that we don't test this scenario (we test VMware Workstation only). Therefore, I will need your help to troubleshot the issue.

Selected Linux Other 5.x as Machine type

I had a look at our doc for VMware Workstation 1, we usually recommend to set the Guest Operating System to "Debian 10.x 64-bit". I don't know what options you have for Machine Type, but ideally you'd go for Debian (or Ubuntu if Debian is not proposed), and select the latest version, 64-bit of course.

VM SCSI Controller: VMWare Paravirtual

For VMware Workstation, we usually set "LSI Logic".

VM Compatibility: ESXi 7.0 U2 and later

So here, I'd suggest to try the lowest compat.

Additionally, if you see anything related to Secure Boot, please disable it. Kali's bootloader and kernel are not signed, so if secure boot is enabled it won't boot.

Thanks!

Could you also please try with the newer 2023.1a Purple ISO we released and see if the issue still occurs?

Hello Kali User,
I recommend you to try Virtual Box.
Thanks
