Summary0002102: Kali cannot be netbooted via cifs
Description

When PXEbooting kali with the following pxe-specific kernel options

root=/dev/cifs netboot=cifs nfsopts=guest nfsroot=//$IP/$ISO_LOOP_PATH

the init script bails out not being able to mount the rootfs.

Solution:

  • include package cifs-utils in the rootfs image
  • add "hmac" to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules to include the required module in the initrd

Thanks
Daniel

in 2016.2 only including cifs-utils is required, manually adding hmac to modules no longer needed

Due to the age of the OS (Kali Moto [v1], Kali Safi [v2], Kali Rolling 2016.x), these legacy versions are no longer supported.
