running kali 2012.2 mate from new kali iso.
running in virtual box 5.1.6
2048G vm
128GB graphics memory
same issue occurs with and without 3d acceleration
same issue occurs with and without mate software compositing

I wonder if this is yet another issue related to Mate not being ready for GTK+3.22.

I'm not going to invest time into fixing Mate until the Debian package maintainer updated Mate to upstream versions which are compatible with GTK+ 3.22.
