I've just ran into this issue as well. Following an apt-get dist-upgrade, the process seemingly locked up 3/4 way through. Reboot my VM and once logged in, the entire desktop is blue, menu's don't populate, and many graphical items as well as text are all missing too. Going to have to start fresh it appears.

There is no need to reinstall. The reason for the blue desktop is due to a borked package when running apt-get upgrade.

Here's how to fix it.

  1. Start up your machine
  2. Select Advanced Options for Kali at the GRUB screen
  3. Select Recovery Mode and the system will start to boot up
  4. Type in your root password when asked
  5. At the command line, run "dpkg --configure -a"
  6. Reboot

This issue is probably gone in the mean time... and the error shown seems to imply it was VMWare specific. Closing the issue as there's nothing I can do.
