Summary0004043: random crashs in everyday normal user tasks
Description

Hello everyone

Linux waran 4.9.0-kali4-amd64 0000001 SMP Debian 4.9.25-1kali1 (2017-05-04) x86_64 GNU/Linux
MATE Desktop, lightdm
HP 8530W NVIDIA QUADRO 770M; nvidia340.102 installed

I have random gui crashes(screen freeze) when i browse Internet, watch movies(even i can't sometimes open the movie), when i search files, even when i click folder or others. This problem was occur when i upgrade my kernel 4.8.x to 4.9. This problem never happen before. Screen went dramatical freeze, cpu overhead, sometimes screen flickering and freeze.

Steps To Reproduce
  1. Fresh install Kali 2017.1
  2. Update & upgrade
  3. Install nvidia driver 340.102 and patch
  4. Just do something and problem will occur on my laptop
Additional Information

I'm digging to solve this problem an i suspect graphics driver, linux-firmware(on other forum recommends rollback linux-firmware or update), maybe is the kernel problem with my hardware.
In repo i can't find kernel 4.8 (works perfect to me) to rollback.
I will send you additional logs if you request.

Best Regards

I see some BIOS and IRQ error strings there.. Im looking into the NVIDIA driver now, but just for a starter, you may try editing boot parameters, by adding:

"noagp noapic nolapic edd=off irqpoll acpi=off" right after where the "quiet" is placed.. then report back here again..

also, seems like the newer kernels want a patch for NVIDIA drivers on higher kernels..

take a look here: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/995429/failed-installed-nvidia-with-kernel-4-10/ (UBUNTU patch for v4.10 available + other info and stash)

and here:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1007266/patch-for-driver-375-39-with-stable-kernel-4-11/ (Kernel v4.11 and v4.11.1 patches and info/stuff)

but BE AWARE!! -- patches MAY need some modification before installing!

Sorry for spamming, but this is the solution/answer..

NVIDIA Drivers 381.22 + Kernel 4.11 = patch is REQUIRED!
BUT, in Kernel v4.11.1 the problem has been fixed again.

If you do like me, you just go wild on Google after a fix for your 'bleeding-edge'
setup (driver & kernel), but if you want to go safe, visit @

Here's a kernel patch which will fix the problem:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=d557d1b58b3546bab2c5bc2d624c5709840e6b10

build it for any kernel you want support on.
-- have a nice day :)

I'm just edit my boot parameters like this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
"noagp noapic nolapic edd=off irqpoll acpi=off"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="initrd=/install/gtk/initrd.gz"

Ive installed previously nvidia340 because only these driver support my gpu; nvidia 37x and 38x doesn't support it;
To install nv340.102 i must patch this driver(i found this in dev nvidia board)
This patch contains something like this:

--- kernel/nv-drm.c 2016-12-15 12:41:26.000000000 +0100
+++ kernel/nv-drm.c 2016-12-15 12:58:48.000000000 +0100

    +#endif
    .load = nv_drm_load,
    .unload = nv_drm_unload,
    .fops = &nv_drm_fops,

I use this patch because i can't even install this driver. Installer said me unable to load nvidia ko (something like this, i dont remember). after applied this patch driver was installed on my system.

hi again i build up the kernel 4.9 with these patch and didn't help me; i download kernel 4.4 from kernel.org and recompile and everything is stable for me; in kernel 4.9 my laptop have problems with normal tasks maybe the devs will be fix this in the future for now i/m staying on kernel 4.4.70. i would like suggest to add few longterm kernel versions like 4.4, 3.16 to repo because many people have old hardware and new versions isn't necessary(not use new features introduced)

for me problem is solved
