Description

With 2017-W43 (and perhaps earlier), after logging out the live user session, you can't get back to the desktop.

Steps To Reproduce

boot kali-linux-2017-W43
select root > Log Out from the top-right menu
wait for either a log in screen or a desktop
look at the text console log instead

The same happens with ALL these:

Select root > logout > logout

displays logging
login screen flashes briefly
displays logging
hang

kali-linux-2016.2-amd64.iso flash login, hang at logs
kali-linux-2017.1-amd64.iso flash login, hang at logs
kali-linux-2017.2-amd64.iso flash login, hang at logs
kali-linux-rolling-amd64.iso 24-Oct-2017 01:52 flash login, hang at logs

.......1.........2.........3.........4.........5.........6....

This release works correctly, logout goes to the login screen.

kali-linux-2016.1-amd64.iso ok

.......1.........2.........3.........4.........5.........6....

When this happens, the system as a whole isn't hung - ssh connections remain fine, and ctrl-alt-del will cleanly reboot.

I've just tried to replicate this in a VM (to check unit status before and after a logout), but wasn't able to. I'll try again later on real hardware.

It is true the system is not 'hung'.
I should have said it 'stops' at showing the log.
I can drop into a virtual console and then back to the gui desktop.

replicating this, I see no significant difference in the output of "systemctl status" between the initial desktop being up, and the failed state after logging out and the desktop not returning.

Due to the age of the OS (Kali Moto [v1], Kali Safi [v2], Kali Rolling 2016.x/2017.x), these legacy versions are no longer supported.
