Summary0004549: Kali Linux Graphical Installer doesn't work on AMD Ryzen 2500U Mobile
Description

Kali Linux Graphical Installer fails to display graphics during the installation on Hp Envy x360 (Model 15M-BQ121DX) with AMD 2500U APU. This is likely due to AMD Firmware Support arriving in the 4.15 Linux Kernel, and lacking the AMD Firmware.

Firmware for these chips can be found in the standard Linux-firmware repo: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/

The installer works in EFI Mode, however, there are many issues in the OS after installing with EFI. (graphical glitches, crashes, etc.)

Steps To Reproduce

Boot into a live session on an Ryzen 2500U chip. Select Graphical Install.

Additional Information

This will likely be resolved over time as the base kernel/firmware expands??? I'm happy to try fixes/betas.

Attaching picture of exact graphical issue. The system is responsive, as I can make the static change as I move the mouse/select different options. I just can't see them.

The issue persists even when hooked up to an external display.

If you install via the cli method, does it then boot up okay?

Hey G0tmi1k,

The issue also occurs in cli mode as well.

I found that if I modify the boot parameter "vga=" to something invalid, I will be asked to provide a valid video mode. I can then specify the value "3D4" and it will continue to the installer in the selected resolution. However, if I specify a valid video mode parameter, the issue will still occur.

Once Kali is installed, the AMD 2500u Raven Ridge firmware is missing from /usr/lib/firmware/amd.

When I clone the official linux firmware git repo and place it in the /usr/lib/firmware/ directory, and update-initramfs -uk I am able to boot into Kali with full graphics acceleration.

On this specific model of HP Laptop, my wireless driver's are also missing, so I have to install with a hardline, then update, install kernel headers, and compile the wireless drivers.

Due to the age of the OS (Kali Moto [v1], Kali Safi [v2], Kali Rolling 2016.x/2017.x/2018.1), these legacy versions are no longer supported.
