Summary | 0005905: Kali USB Boot from Mac Os Catalina Startup Disk Manager
Description | Terminal command I was able then able to reboot in Live Mode using Virtual Box but not from Mac OS Catalina 15.1 Disk Manager. When restarting MAC and pressing OPTION to select the USB drive, it runs, but eventually the kernel goes into "panic mode", it stops, and gives a message the the kernel is corrupted. I bought the Mac Linux USB Loader, and the exact same problem happens when booting directly for Mac Os Catalina Disk Manager on start up.
Steps To Reproduce | I followed all the instructions and indications entirely from Chapter 2 in the Kali Revealed Book, using the exercise answers to corroborate all my work. All work, including keys verified, done directly in Kali Linux 2019.4 (with all up to date updates) running in Oracle's Virtualbox. That's all that I can reproduce for you since in start up mode, no other option is available (other than filming with my phone, but the text since while boot up is running is extremely small).
Additional Information | I am using a: MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018) , with T2 security chip.
Are you trying to boot Kali on your MacBook, or are you trying to create a bootable USB drive of Kali using your Mac? |
|
I am trying to boot Kali on my Mac. I have successfully created a USB drive which I have used to successfully boot Kali in Live Mode within VBox. |

Unfortunately Linux on Macs is all over the place due to the kernel versions. You can try to do the following: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/11/apple-t2-chip-cant-boot-linux however I am unsure if it will work as Kali is based off of Debian testing which has kernel version 5.3 and according to this https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=NVMe-Patches-LKML-Apple-Mac we may not even see support for the storage in the 5.4 kernel. If you make any progress on getting it to work, feel free to update the ticket as it could make a good reference for others. |
|
You can just use usb-c -- sata or thunderbolt3 -- nmve external disk (without access to internal nvme disk as of now). I usually use it, or windows 10)) |

This report has been filed against an old version of Kali. We will be closing this ticket due to inactivity. |
