I've witness somebody had a similar issue about 9-10 months ago and if I remember correctly, it has something to do with the drivers/hardware.

And one thing you could give a try is:

1. Use a external regular mouse/keyboard and see if anything happens and if it works then go from there and try doing some update/upgrades.

I honestly don't know if this would work and potentially the good thing to do is use a VM because I believe the keyboard/Trackpad will work maybe ¯_(ツ)_/¯

notes: try using a non-apple product when attempting to use a regular keyboard/mouse.
