Summary0008674: Kernel panic on some CPU
Description

Dear maintainers,

I am building kali-live from time to time and itshows, that the latest kernel seem to get some problems with the cpu.

Whilst it is running on my Intel I5, it looks like the AMD FX is getting in trouble.

The result is a kernel panic at boot.

This is the cpu, where I get the panic:

It looks like, KALI does not like the AMD CPUs, or it is just by chance. All is tested with the latest live-build.

Another hint:
For the AMF FX 6-core CPU also the official KALI-ISO from the website is running into kernel panic at boot, but only when booted from an USB-stick (created by using the dd command).
Burning on to a DVD and then boot from itm does NOT cause a kernel panic.

Hope this helps, if my report is a double, please merge.

Thank you for reading this.

Best regards

Hans

Can you try Debian and see what happens?

I have Debian stable running on the computer with the AMD FX 6-core cpu. The kernel is 6.1. from stable (running fine) and actual the kernel 6.5.X.X-bpo, running also fine.

Latest KALI-kernel is 6.6.X, so it is not the same. But please note: Kernel 6.5.X from Kali is also working fine.

So, testing with Debian is IMO not very conclusive (expressive?) [maybe wrong English idion here]

Tomorrow I will build a new one. It is not ruled out, that something might have happened either during the build, or during the transfer to the USB-stick using dd or something with the USB itself (i.e. hardware problems), which may affect these kernels (maybe some unusual calls, that only effects some cpus, some not).

Thus I want to get sure, that nothing went wrong by chance during these chain of processes.

I will inform you as soon as I know more.

Ok, built a new one today and tested. Built on 2 different and new USAB-sticks and built twice and without usng apt-cacher-ng (which sometimes causes problems, see my other bugreport)

Result:

  1. AMD FX = kernel panic
  2. Intel I3 = working
  3. AMD Athlon 64 = working

This proves:

  1. the USB-stick is ok
  2. The command dd is working correctly.
  3. No issues during the image generating and download

So we can conclude: The bew kernel 6.6.X does not like the AMD FX CPU, maybe due to its other internal memoryhandling whantever.

Maybe you might want to take a look at it, although I believe, there are not many people using this old processors.
