Summary0008833: New realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms incompatible with RTL8812au
Description

With the latest version of realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms and realtek-rtl8814au-dkms, the Alfa AWUS036AC WiFi adapter (with RTL8812AU chip) does not work. It appears in iw phy and in the network manager, but it cannot connect to WiFi or enable monitor mode.

I tried on some VMs, doing a full upgrade and then downgrading some packages. It seems that
with these older versions, the card works well, including monitor mode:

$ apt list --installed| grep realtek
firmware-realtek/kali-rolling,now 20230625-2+kali1 all [installato, automatico]
realtek-rtl8814au-dkms/kali-rolling,now 5.8.5.1~git20231211.866a910-0kali1 all [installato, automatico]
realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms/kali-rolling,now 5.6.4.2~git20231117.a3e0c0b-0kali1 all [installato]
$ uname -a
Linux kali 6.6.15-amd64 0000001 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Kali 6.6.15-2kali1 (2024-04-09) x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ dkms status
realtek-rtl8814au/5.8.5.1~git20231211.866a910, 6.6.15-amd64, x86_64: installed
realtek-rtl88xxau/5.6.4.2~git20231117.a3e0c0b, 6.6.15-amd64, x86_64: installed

With latest version:

$ apt list --installed| grep realtek
firmware-realtek/kali-rolling,now 20230625-2+kali1 all [installato, automatico]
realtek-rtl8814au-dkms/kali-rolling,now 5.8.5.1~git20240527.d8208c8-0kali1 all [installato, automatico]
realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms/kali-rolling,now 5.6.4.2~git20240510.b44d288-0kali1 all [installato]

$ dkms status
realtek-rtl8814au/5.8.5.1~git20240527.d8208c8, 6.8.11-amd64, x86_64: installed
realtek-rtl88xxau/5.6.4.2~git20240510.b44d288, 6.8.11-amd64, x86_64: installed

the card don't work.

These drivers work with new kernel:
https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8812au but only commit 63cf0b4
https://github.com/lwfinger/rtw88

To reproduce:

  • Use a Kali Linux and upgrade to the latest version
  • Install realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms (the other package is a dependency)
  • Connect the network adapter and observe the incorrect behavior
  • Downgrade the packages (I downloaded them from https://kali.download/kali/pool/):
    linux-kbuild-6.6.15_6.6.15-2kali1+b1_amd64.deb
    linux-headers-6.6.15-common_6.6.15-2kali1_all.deb
    linux-headers-6.6.15-amd64_6.6.15-2kali1+b1_amd64.deb
    linux-image-6.6.15-amd64_6.6.15-2kali1+b1_amd64.deb
    realtek-rtl8814au-dkms_5.8.5.1~git20231211.866a910-0kali1_all.deb
    realtek-rtl88xxau-dkms_5.6.4.2~git20231117.a3e0c0b-0kali1_all.deb
  • Reboot with the old kernel
  • The network adapter works correctly
