Description:
ClipVault is an open-source clipboard history manager for Linux, similar to Windows Win+V. It keeps a searchable history of copied text, rich HTML and images, and shows a popup at the cursor (X11) or bottom-center (Wayland) via a hotkey.
Features:
- Super+V popup (configurable), 25-5000 entries (default 250)
- SQLite + FTS5 full-text search, blake3 de-duplication
- Pinning (pins survive clear-all and restarts)
- Paste as plain text (Shift+Enter) and optional auto-paste
- Text, HTML and PNG image support
- Works on X11 (XFIXES/XTEST) and Wayland (wlr-data-control, wtype)
- CLI control: clipvault toggle | list | select N | clear | settings | status
- Privacy features: password-manager exclusion (x-kde.passwordManagerHint + app blocklist), conceal-previews mode, per-item size cap, history DB stored with mode 0600
- Systemd user service for autostart; libadwaita settings panel
Why it fits Kali:
Pentesters constantly copy and re-use commands, hashes, tokens, payloads, IPs and credentials across terminals, notes and browsers. Losing a clipboard entry mid-engagement costs time. Kali has no clipboard history manager by default, and ClipVault supports both X11 and Wayland, which matches Kali's current desktop options. It has been tested on Kali Linux Rolling.
Dependencies:
libgtk-4, libadwaita-1, libgtk4-layer-shell, libdbus-1, wl-clipboard, xdotool, wtype (all already in Debian/Kali repositories). Build: cargo / rustc.
Similar tools already in Kali:
None by default. Alternatives such as CopyQ, Diodon, and Clipman exist in Debian, but they lack a Win+V-style popup with search, pinning and Wayland support in one tool.
How the tool is used:
Run "clipvault daemon" (or enable the systemd user unit), then press Super+V to open history. Config is at ~/.config/clipvault/config.toml; data is in ~/.local/share/clipvault/.
Packaging:
A packaging/ directory and Makefile are included in the repository. I'm happy to help with Debian packaging and to maintain the upstream project. |
