Summary0009906: Hibernation resume fails with spd5118 and xhci_pci PM callback errors on HP ZBook Fury G9
Description

Package: linux-image-7.1.5+kali-amd64
Version: 7.1.5-1+kali1
Severity: normal

Hibernation (systemctl hibernate) fails to resume on an HP ZBook Fury G9 when the spd5118 and xhci_pci modules are loaded. Unloading these modules before hibernation allows resume to succeed. Upstream fixes for both drivers already exist but are not yet present in this kernel version.

Steps to Reproduce:

Ensure the spd5118 and xhci_pci modules are loaded.

Run sudo systemctl hibernate.

Power on the system.

The system performs a cold boot instead of resuming, and the following errors appear:
text

spd5118 0-0051: PM: dpm_run_callback(): spd5118_resume [spd5118] returns -6
spd5118 0-0051: PM: failed to thaw async: error -6
xhci_hcd 0000:3c:00.0: PM: dpm_run_callback(): pci_pm_thaw returns -19
xhci_hcd 0000:3c:00.0: PM: failed to thaw async: error -19
pcieport 0000:06:00.0: Unable to change power state from unknown to D0, device inaccessible
thunderbolt 0000:08:00.0: Unable to change power state from unknown to D0, device inaccessible

Workaround: run sudo modprobe -r spd5118 xhci_pci before hibernating. Resume then succeeds.

Expected Behavior:
The system should resume from hibernation without requiring manual module unloading.

Actual Behavior:
Resume fails; the system performs a cold boot.

Hardware:

Laptop: HP ZBook Fury G9

RAM: DDR5 with SPD5118 temperature sensors

USB controller: Renesas xHCI (PCI ID 0000:3c:00.0)

Relevant Upstream Fixes (already merged or in review):

spd5118: patch to avoid hardware access during PM callbacks.

xhci_pci: CVE-2026-80861 — bail out if the controller is inaccessible before dereferencing. Fixed in Linux 7.3-rc1.

Request:
Please backport the upstream fixes for spd5118 and xhci_pci into the Kali kernel so that hibernation works without manual module unloading.

Additional Information:

The same configuration (swap UUID, resume= parameter, RESUME= in initramfs) is correct.

The failure only occurs when these two drivers are loaded.
