I just checked over on Kali Troubleshooting and a guy just in the past hour posted a similar issue. He had the 'output' from the update/upgrade/dist-upgrade. I THINK it is what mine stated on my updating/upgrading. I will copy-paste it below.

The new kernel is not involved in your problem. The screenshot that you are showing is a typical error screen of gnome-shell.
Debian is switching to GNOME 3.36 and Debian Testing (and thus kali-rolling) currently has a mixture of GNOME 3.34 and GNOME 3.36. I believe that this is the root cause that results in this breakage. We will look into importing the missing pieces from Debian unstable. |
@rhertzog
Okay, thank you very much for responding so quickly. I really appreciate it. |
We have imported the missing packages in kali-rolling. It will fix gdm3.
You'll have to update and upgrade your system to get the latest version required by gdm3, like gnome-shell version 3.36.1-5
(the mirror you used may not be up to date yet, it takes time) |
@sbrun
Thank you. It's not there yet, I'll check again in a little while.
I appreciate your time. |
@sbrun
Okay, I was able to install what was needed to advance to login. Thank you!
- Just a 'heads-up'... I attached a screenshot of/in tweaks/extensions. 'Workspaces to dock' may be outdated. Mine do not appear.
Thanks for your time. |
Thanks for the report.
I will check the extensions and fix them if needed |
its work with debian backages
vi /etc/apt/sources.list.d/unstable.list
Paste:
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main
:wq Enter
then
apt update
apt -t unstable install gnome-shell
reboot
rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/unstable.list
and worked :wink:
but my question is, this way works on all new packages? |
@sbrun
No problem. Thanks. |
I have just uploaded gnome-shell-extension-workspaces-to-dock version 52+git20200318-0kali1. |
@sbrun
I've been checking but it (gnome-shell-extension-workspaces-to-dock version 52+git20200318-0kali1) hasn't become available yet. I'll give it some more time.
Thanks a lot. |
@sbrun
- "gnome-shell-extension-workspaces-to-dock version 52+git20200318-0kali1" is installed and is now working properly. *(screenshot attached)
Thank you. |
I have a problem with dash-to-dock extension after upgrading the gnome version to 3.36. Could anyone solve this? |
The screenshot of the extension which is not loading. I a new user of kali linux so didnt know what to do . |
@sharads_98
Delete or rename all files in ~/.local/share/gnome-shell then logout and login then should be fixed
Hope that helps :) |
