Summary0000129: Upgrading kali-menu package from 1.31 to 1.321 causes the Kali Linux menu to disappear
Description

When upgrading the kali-menu package from 1.31 to 1.321 the Kali Linux menu disappears, and all applications are placed into a single "Other" menu.

Nothing odd appears (or appears missing) in /usr/share/applications or /usr/share/kali-menu, and the update-kali-menu script does not fix the issue.

Re-installing the kali-menu package does not fix the issue either.

Ended up doing a re-install of the whole OS to get them back.

Didn't try it a second time - don't want to have to do another re-install.

Steps To Reproduce

1) Install from ISO, where kali-menu v1.31 package is default.
2) Run the software update with the kali-menu v1.321 patch selected.
3) Menu disappears. Rebooting does not fix.

This does not sound like a bug in kali-menu. The upgrade works fine in a pristine install. We notice many users trying to edit the Kali menu using the gnome-menu editor, which will inherently kill the menu.
Leaving suspended for more user input.

Didn't do anything but install and reboot. Perhaps another patch being applied at the same time ran some kind of menu update which killed it, but nothing menu related was touched between booting up, running the update, and rebooting.

I noticed some gnome patches were in the queue, perhaps they're the source of the trouble?

Not sure what patches you are talking about. Nothing is patched during the installation of a package. Perhaps a language barrier ?
kali-menu has been updated for some desktop file updates, and still no issues seen in our pristine install. Closing this bug report.
