I have the same problem. I upgraded it with apt-get from Kali 2 and I remember that after hours of upgrading, when it tried to install some "themes", it was interrupted ("screen of death" - "oops..something....") so I had to restart it .
After that I had to run dpkg - i -a (or something) to continue, it continued for an hour or so, now it's a "fully upgraded" to rolling edition.
But as a user before me said, I have NO SOUND (sound worked in backtrack 5,in kali 1,106,1.09,2 , but now it simply don't recognise any output or input sound device.
And the same with dropdown "Applications" menu, it dissapeared. There (at top left) is only "Activities", which opens the left "favorites" icons and desktop previews on right.

So , NO SOUND, NO DROPDOWN MENU.

You can re-enable the applications menu from gnome-tweak-tool. It's a GNOME Shell extension that might be deactivated in case of crash (I think it's a form of safety measure of the Shell).

For pulseaudio and the sound, you have to use "systemctl --user enable pulseaudio.service" to enable it permanently (takes effect on next boot).

Let me know if this lets you fix your issues.

Thanks, closing the bug as I don't have anything to do. pulseaudio is enabled by default in live images, I don't know what disabled it on your system. And the other one is outside of my control...
