Summary0003232: Xorg server crash on HP DL380 G7
Description

Hi,

I have tried to install latest KAli Linux 2016.1 on my HP DL380 G7 several times. It was running Kali Linux v2.0 without any problem. Under same hardware, X Windows will always crash on Kali Linux 2016.1. Once it is crashed, both keyboard and mouse will stop working. However, I can still login via SSH and everything is working fine.

Steps To Reproduce
  1. Just have a fresh Kali Linux 2016.1 installed on a HP DL380 G7. After reboot, keyboard and mouse will stop working.

  2. Install from Kali Linux 2.0, and perform upgrade to 2016.1. Once it's upgraded to 2016.1, the problem shows up again.

  3. If I just install Kali Linux 2.0, everything is fine.

I can always reproduce the same problem as I have tried it many times.

Additional Information

Based on the /var/log/Xorg.0.log, the Xorg version is 1.17.2. The system was installed and upgraded from v2.0 w/ SSH enabled so I can see what's the problem from remote. Let me know if you need more detail information.

Do you see some error messages in dmesg and/or in the journal?

Have you upgraded to the latest kernel and Xorg from kali-rolling? (i.e. ran " apt update && apt full-upgrade" after the install of 2016.1?

Somehow I cannot login again so I just create a new account. I am Jason Chen.

One trick I found is that if I keep pressing "ctrl+c" during boot, X windows will NOT hang/crash and I can login from X window GUI. If I don't do that, after it starts X, mouse and keyboard is completely hang. There is a mouse pointer in the center but I cannot move or type anything.

During last week I tried other OSs and all are working fine w/o such problem so it seems not related to hardware. I also try to change mouse/keyboard but no help.

It seems like some service caused that X windows not working, but so far I don't have time to debug it down which one. I don't know why pressing "ctrl+c" works during boot.

Here is some log info before Xorg totally hang.

Please see the uploaded "Kali_X.PNG" file. This is from iLo3 console.

I just have update again also try "apt-get full-upgrade", but there is no help.
I try to install CentOS and Debian before, there are also working fine.

Not sure anything special in Kali Rolling version. This happened only in 2016.01 rolling. 2.0 is still working fine.

Due to the age of the OS (Kali Moto [v1], Kali Safi [v2], Kali Rolling 2016.x), these legacy versions are no longer supported.
We will be closing this ticket due to inactivity.

Please could you see if you are able to replicate this issue with the latest version of Kali Linux - https://www.kali.org/downloads/)?
