| Platform | Four(4) Different Laptops | OS | Kali updated and upgraded | OS Version | 1.0 |
| Summary | 0000441: Conflict when a non functioning internal wifi recviever is present | ||||
| Description | If a non functioning internal wifi reciever is present it shuts down the ability of any external usb wifi reciever like an AWUSO36H RTL8187 to connect to the internet. The Network Manager Applet states wireless is disabled by hardware switch.
This has been tested on four(4) computers. Two have functioning internal wifi recievers and two(2) do not. All four laptaps are different from each other. To update a persistent usb which is functioning it must be plugged in to a compiuter with a functioning internal wifi reciever to update or use to connect to the internet. In one case Kali was installed on the HD then updated and upgraded. Later the internal wifi failed to function and at that poiont no inteernet access was possible. Tried removing batteries etc as outlined in forums Kali is certainly buggy we are staying with BT5R3 HD installs and only trsting Kali with persistant usb approach until these problems can be solved. | ||||
| Steps To Reproduce | N/A see above. However if a internal wifi can be manually turned of by a button we suspect this bug will emerge | ||||

This bug report is unclear and not reproducible. |

Bug is easily reproducable. Non-functioning means it is either switched off or damaged. We provide this update. An HP510 laptop - We ran tests overnight. In windows XP the internal wifi did not work BUT the external usb AWUS036H(RTL8187) worked fine Historical Reference - We previously had installed a dual boot Kali-linux/XP and had run apt-update apt-upgrade using a connection thru the internal wifi. Later for some reason the internal wifi stopped functioning in both windows and kali. The external usb wifi as mentioned worked fine in windows. When we ran up Kali we were unable to get any wifi connection working both internal or thru a external usb as Kali kept saying the system was locked by a hardware switch. However we could run airodump-ng, aireplay-ng,reaver,wash etc thru the AWUSO36H. To try and solve this:

Wifi Manual on/off buttons on labtop computers such as HP
If your computer is running only kali-linux and you manually turn the wifi off, you may be unable to manually restore the internal wifi. If the internal wifi cannot be manually restored, kali will lock out all wifi activity with a hardware notice and a connection to the internet will be impossible thru wifi. You will still have aircrack-ng as mentioned above. |

Please provide the output of dmesg in the various cases (working, non-working). Also please provide the output of "nmcli --pretty dev status", "nmcli --pretty dev list" and "nmcli --pretty nm status". BTW rfkill is available once you install the "rfkill" package. |
