Disabling 3D acceleration via VM Manager fixes this issue, at least it did for me. Must be something to do with that.

Changing the xfwm (compositor) vblank method to 'xpresent' or 'off' resolved this for me under VMware Workstation 15.5 with 3D acceleration enabled.

Restart xfwm with vblank set to 'xpresent':
$ xfwm4 --replace --vblank=xpresent &

Restart xfwm with vblank set to 'off':
$ xfwm4 --replace --vblank=off &

Permanently set the vblank method:
$ xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/vblank_mode -s xpresent
