I have a similar problem but was never booted into the desktop GUI. Mine is only showing a black screen although the mouse pointer is vaguely visible when I move it (Screen.PNG)
Running it on VMware Workstation and was done as an upgrade from 2020.1

Trying to access the TTY via CTRL+ALT+F keys did not work. I had to boot to recovery mode to be able to access the prompt and from there issue an init 3 to be logged via tty1.
Tried running startxfce4 or startx resulted in an error (Error.PNG)

Kindly ignore my comment. For some unknown reasons my VM restarted itself and did not complete the upgrade?
I ran an apt-get upgrade and told me that I had some additional components to be upgraded.
After that I was able to boot into the desktop.

For some reason xfdesktop isn't properly working for you
Try restarting it from the terminal with xfdesktop -R & disown
