Description

Laptop: HP Victus 16

GPU lines from lspci -nnk | grep -A3 -E "VGA|3D"

Working kernel:Linux kali 6.16.8+kali-amd64 0000001 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Kali 6.16.8-1kali1 (2025-09-24) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Broken kernel:Linux kali 6.17.10+kali-amd64 0000001 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Kali 6.16.8-1kali1 (2025-12-08) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Steps:

Boot 6.17.10 normally → black screen with blinking cursor in top‑left.

Boot 6.17.10 with nomodeset → text login (tty).

Run startx → Xorg 1.21.1.21 exits with “Fatal server error: no screens found” and “kernel modesetting enabled” in the log.

Note clearly: 6.16.8 works fine with GNOME on the same hardware.

Hopefully it will get fixed with a newer kernel? You should look for other similar reports (Linux users having the same laptop as you), just to see if someone managed to come up with a workaround, or reported that it's fixed in a newer Linux version, or any other kind of useful information.

We can't tackle hardware issues within the Kali team, we don't have time. But if we know that the issue is fixed with a newer version of the kernel, or some package, then we can make sure the fix reaches Kali asap.
