Summary0009522: Installer from live image fails
Description

Hello,

The openQA tests for Kali are failing: https://openqa.debian.net/tests/overview?distri=kali&version=testing-kali&build=20260120_0102-daily-amd64&groupid=12

The installer cannot finish: https://openqa.debian.net/tests/486683#step/kali_mirror_selection/8

The last passing test was on 2026-01-06, the first failing test was on 2026-01-13

With kind regards,
Roland Clobus

Thanks for the ping Roland! I see that it passed on 20260127, looks like something is flaky. Well, actually I know that something is flaky with installation, I think since the solver 3.0 became the default in apt. So maybe it's what we see here, not sure.

I will work on that today, and I'll keep an eye on https://openqa.debian.net/group_overview/12

Hello Arnaud,

Looking at a newer build: https://openqa.debian.net/tests/492070#step/kali_mirror_selection/144

(I advise to look at the offline installer build logs, because they contain the content of /var/log/syslog during the installation)

This is the error message:

Feb 3 23:29:40 kernel: [ 482.090052] SQUASHFS error: xz decompression failed, data probably corrupt
Feb 3 23:29:40 kernel: [ 482.090096] SQUASHFS error: Failed to read block 0xeac7cc75: -5
Feb 3 23:29:40 base-installer: error: The tar process copying the live system failed (only 326728 out of 432237 files have been copied, last file was ).

Hello Roland,

squashfs error looks to me like corrupt data, was the ISO downloaded correctly?

I tried looking at more recent result, eg. https://openqa.debian.net/tests/500220#, but then I don't understand why it doesn't go as far as the other one, it seems like the installer never started.

Hello Arnoud,

in the mean time, Kali has change the themes and that is why the more recent tests have failed. I'm working on updating the needles to match the new theme.

Is it intentional that the focus rectangles are now more rounded? See old: https://openqa.debian.net/tests/489979#step/partitions/7 and new: https://openqa.debian.net/tests/500989#step/partitions/7

BTW: If you have a Debian Salsa account, I can grant you additional rights in openqa.debian.net. Then you will be able to update the needles yourself when a graphical change is made in Kali.

Hello Roland,

yep we refresh the theme every year during the first quarter.

Is it intentional that the focus rectangles are now more rounded?

Good catch. I don't think it's intentional, but I'm not sure it's really us changing something either? I pinged @daniruiz

BTW: If you have a Debian Salsa account, I can grant you additional rights in openqa.debian.net. Then you will be able to update the needles yourself when a graphical change is made in Kali.

Yes I do, arnaudr is my nick in Salsa. Please invite me. Don't hesitate to ping me when something shows up, I don't promise I'll find the time to do anything, but I'll try. At least if I have access I'm more likely to do something ;)

Hello @rclobus !

Thanks for checking the changes. About the more rounded outline in the installer, that's intentional. It's part of the small installer theme refresh

Hello Arnaud,

Can you use the 'Login' button in the upper right hand corner of openqa.debian.net? When your account is seen there, I can grant you additional rights.

@arnaudr: You are now 'Operator', which means that you will be able to create new needles when they fail and you can (re)start jobs.

If you need changes to the scripts, write to [email protected] or fix it in Salsa: https://salsa.debian.org/qa/openqa/openqa-tests-debian

At this specific moment, the Kali installer is running, https://openqa.debian.net/tests/501075. I've adjusted the script and hopefully it will stop properly that the 'Installation step failed' screen. Then it's up to the Kali developers to see what went wrong...
