Summary0001240: Starting OpenVAS Manager: ERROR.
Description

When starting openvas manager by executing "service openvas-manager start" or executing "openvas-start" it gives an error.

Output: Starting OpenVAS Manager: ERROR.

Steps To Reproduce

Execute "service openvas-manager start" or "openvas-start"

It only happens the first time that openvas manager is started. If later you execute "service openvas-manager stop" and "service openvas-manager start", then it starts correctly.

Additional Information

I tried to get any info from the log but it I just have this:
$ cat /var/log/openvas/openvasmd.log
lib auth: INFO:2014-05-14 17h18.18 utc:5844: Authentication configuration not found.

But it is not related to the error(I think)

I found this googling: http://forum.backbox.org/howtos/fix-openvas-manager-exiting-with-error-during-openvas-services-start/

It seems that the default timeout is too short. I don't know how to check if it is true.

Sorry for reopening but I don't quite understand, Am I supposed to use openvas-setup everytime I want to start openvas?

Because if I do openvas-setup and then restart the system, when I boot again and I do openvas-start it still fails even though openvas-check-setup says everything is okay(just a few warnings that should not matter)

Here is the command line output: http://pastebin.com/Tc9Fxvxn
I don't know how to upload it on mantis bug tracker

EDIT: Once I reopened, it let me upload the command line output.

Also my kali linux is installed in the hdd, it is not booted from a livecd. Theoretically openvas should be able to start with openvas-start and openvas-setup only be needed once.

Apologies for my brevity.

The "openvas-setup" will go through the steps required to set-up openvas for the first time, including setting up an admin username and password. Running the script should at some stage prompt you to enter the password for an admin user.

Once you've done this, you should be able to start and stop the various openvas services without issue - i've verified this on a local installation of mine.

In any case, you can inspect the openvas-setup script to get a better idea of the procedures required to get openvas up an running.

Please keep this ticket updated if this is not the case for you, and i will re-open the report. Thanks!

Linux kali 3.14-kali1-686-pae 0000001 SMP Debian 3.14.4-1kali1 (2014-05-14) i686 GNU/Linux (Virtualbox 4.3.12 r93733 Guest OS)

Host OS: Windows 8 Home Edition 64bit

I too had openvas already setup, as done by the procedure in PWK. I tried to run it without setting it up again, and the password did not work. So i tried to run the setup script again, and was prompted with this error.

I debugged /etc/init.d/openvas-manager running this:

<pre>root@kali:~# bash -x /etc/init.d/openvas-manager start</pre>

I will attach the debug log

We can see that the error is because the running() function can't see the pidfile. In the start_daemon() function there is the following comment:

<pre># If we don't sleep then running() might not see the pidfile</pre>

I run Kali in a virtual machine so it seems to be that the virtual machine is kind of slow. The easiest solution would be just to increase the DODTIME variable but people with faster computers would complain. In fact they are right as the daemon is running even though it says ERROR, just check this after a few seconds:

<pre>root@kali:~# /etc/init.d/openvas-manager status
OpenVAS Manager is running</pre>

So my proposal is to change the start case in line 82 of the file /etc/init.d/openvas-manager to this for example:

<pre>start)
echo -n "Starting $LABEL: "
start_daemon || {
echo "ERROR."
exit 1
}
if running ; then
echo "openvasmd."
else
echo "WARNING: Can't confirm that the daemon is running."
exit 1
fi
;;</pre>

This way there is a difference when there is a real error or just a little issue that can be ignored.

We could also set a timeout so we give running $TIMEOUT tries before echoing the warning. Altough this is kind of silly because, as I said before, the daemon is already running.

<pre>TIMEOUT=12

start)
echo -n "Starting $LABEL: "
start_daemon || {
echo "ERROR."
exit 1
}
if running ; then
echo "openvasmd."
else
local TIMEOUT_START=$TIMEOUT
while [ $TIMEOUT_START -ge 0 ]
do

I can't write "let TIMEOUT_STARTminusminus" because mantis bug tracker doesn't let me write it

                let TIMEOUT_START-=1
                sleep $DODTIME
                running && break
                [ $TIMEOUT_START -eq 0 ] && {
                        echo &quot;WARNING: Can't confirm that the daemon is running.&quot;
                        exit 1
                }
        done
        echo &quot;openvasmd.&quot;
fi
;;</pre>

However, debian is migrating to systemd and I assume that kali is going to do the same so then this maybe not so useful. What do you think?

EDIT: I have been editing this lots of times to find out that you can't write anything in mantis if it contains 2 consecutive minus signs

Due to the age of the OS (Kali Moto [v1], Kali Safi [v2], Kali Rolling 2016.x), these legacy versions are no longer supported.
We will be closing this ticket due to inactivity.
