Summary0002305: All types of problems on EFI systems
Description

I made a USB stick with Win32DiskImager of a validated ISO downloaded directly from kali.org. First off, the live system has all sorts of problems, mainly it hangs after a while. Sometimes it works pretty well, but mostly it hangs after a while.

So I started installing Kali and didn't have the slightest problem doing so. The problem is, after I've booted into Kali, all I got was a blank screen. Couldn't access tty1 with Ctrl+Alt+F1 neither. I tried to chroot from the Live stick into the installed system and perform apt-get upgrade, but didn't create any results.

I tried to reinstall and make a second EFI partition and had hoped this would resolve the problem, but didn't help. I also tried 1.1.0 and 1.0.9a, but the same problems with those.

I can't tell if it's a general problem with EFI systems or if it's just a problem with my chipset. However, others have reported the same problem.

Here's a thread in the Kali Linux forums about what I've tried:

Here's another thread reporting the same problem:

Steps To Reproduce

Downloaded Kali 1.1.0a ISO from the official page.
Verified the download, hash was correct.
Used Win32DiskImager to create the USB disk.
USB disk doesn't boot all the time, sometimes hangs mid-booting, sometimes boots fully, but hangs after Kali Live runs a while.
Installed Kali to the SSD, two partitions for / and a SWAP, also used the already installed EFI partition.
Start up Kali. After choosing Kali from the Grub menu, just a blank screen. No error messages, nothing. Ctrl+Alt+Delete works, though.
Kali Recovery mode doesn't work, neither.
Going into console mode in Grub and entering ls (hd0,gpt3)/ lists up all files, so it seems to have been installed.

Additional Information

My laptop:
MSI GE70
Samsung 850 Evo
i7
8GB RAM
Dualbooting with Win 8.1
Had Arch Linux and openSUSE installed previously. Both worked like a charm.

Due to the age of the OS (Kali Moto [v1], Kali Safi [v2], Kali Rolling 2016.x), these legacy versions are no longer supported.
