Summary0003136: Every time something is written to the hard drive the hard drive makes a vibrating noise
Description

I made a fresh install 64 bit kali 2016.1 on a dell e6400,2.53ghz,4gb ram which already had windows 7, installed.

Toawrds the end of the install process, process bar 53%,'where you are instructed to remove all devices from the drive or ports' the noise started to appear, as if the hard drive is mechanically faulty, and might need replacing, the effect in layman terms is a 'vibrating' can be heard, at this time there is no device connected to any of the usb ports, and i am not physically touching the laptop.

After restart, intial boot, i opened a few windows [programs], iceweseal, proxy setting for wifi configuration and fern cracker, just to test.

And the result seems, that the noise 'vibration' appears at every instance something is being written to the hard drive, or process is being executed, by a click 'i.e opening of a window for a program.

Once the particular function has been executed, the noise disappears

Steps To Reproduce

I restarted the laptop, to re test and the issue is still there, i ahve also booted into windows 7, and there is no issue in realtion to what i am experiencing in kali linux 2016.1.

I am currently reporting this issue from windows not, and not a sound is coming from the hard drive, as i type or open a program, and i have been using the machine since 7.30am this morning with a breaks at diffrent times.

Additional Information

there is no issue with the hard drive, i have used hddtune and the likes to check it's status and all is ok

The reason i have stated priority high, is effectively, a piece of code is telling the hard drive to do x, and being a mechanincal device,it has a tolerance of what it can withstand, and i am aware of how software can be used to effect the operations of the hardware, not with kali linux, but mobile phones and tablets, and as a result i am weary to use the software fully, as any prolonged duration of the vibration, will without doubt damage the hard drive.

I'm sorry but we won't investigate this issue for you. Have a look at hdparm and try tuning some settings if it can help.

Try to identify what kernel version started showing this behaviour and try to discuss the issue with the relevant kernel developers.
