Summary0003244: 2016.1 does not work on ASUS GL552VW
Description

2016.1 does not work on ASUS GL552VW

Using UEFI the installer does not bootup at all.
With Legacy settings and without UEFI the installer boot none of the options work, so Live option will give an error such as attached.
Graphical installation will just hang with a blinking cursor(?) and black screen.

The interesting thing is, Kali 2.0 installs just fine.
So I installed Kali 2.0 (both Live & Graphical install works) and then upgraded to 2016.2 by adding the rolling repository and upgrading.
After the installation I rebooted and came across the same black screen and blinking cursor.

So in Grub2, I removed the quiet boot command so that it displays the error, they are the same thing you get when you try booting the live cd (attached).

Steps To Reproduce

Try running Kali 2016.1 Live CD or graphical install

Right so I can install it using a daily image (although it can be a hit or miss getting the installer to show).
Once installed it does not let me login.
Cursor is choppy, once I enter my username and password, it freezes with just the empty grey background.
If I wait about 10 seconds on login page without logging in, the fans spin at 100% and it freezes.

Have the same laptop aswell. I upgraded to Kali rolling just fine. Issues started when I installed Nvidia . Also have no TouchPad functionality, or battery indicator. Have had no issues on any other pc. For some reason Kali seems to HATE this laptop. I would love to know if there is a way to make Kali more compatible with this laptop...

Well I'm starting to hate this laptop because it's not just Kali.
I think the issue is that the hardware is too new.
It'll probably get better with time.

I've just installed Deepin by adding the following to grub:
nouveau.modeset=0 tpm_tis.interrupts=0 acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native i915.preliminary_hw_support=1 idle=nomwait

I also removed quiet splash, so it shows me what it's doing.
Deepin is working completely fine right now, so I'm probably going to try the same with Kali tomorrow to see if it works.

As for Nvidia drivers, I've got a Desktop with a gtx970 that has Kali running on it, after installing the proprietary Nvidia drivers from their website, it was just constant crashing but if you use the default (nouveau) drivers, it works just fine. I'm going to try messing with Kali on the laptop tomorrow anyways.

Right got it to work.

I did the following:

  1. Installed daily image (today)

  2. At startup, in grub loader press e
    Look for the linux line and the word quiet, replace quiet with the following:
    nouveau.modeset=0 tpm_tis.interrupts=0 acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native i915.preliminary_hw_support=1 idle=nomwait

  3. Once booted:
    sudo vi /etc/default/grub
    Look for GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
    Replace quiet with the following:
    nouveau.modeset=0 tpm_tis.interrupts=0 acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native i915.preliminary_hw_support=1 idle=nomwait

Then sudo update-grub
and reboot

Touchpad is choppy on login page but otherwise works just fine.
Fan is a little louder than in other distros but not like before.
I suppose the hw is too new.

Due to the age of the OS (Kali Moto [v1], Kali Safi [v2], Kali Rolling 2016.x), these legacy versions are no longer supported.
We will be closing this ticket due to inactivity.

Please could you see if you are able to replicate this issue with the latest version of Kali Linux - https://www.kali.org/downloads/)?
