Summary0003945: cuda-nvidea crashes Kali Linux 2.0 (kernel 4.9)
Description

Hello, I wanted to test this: https://www.kali.org/news/cloud-cracking-with-cuda-gpu/

Once I installed: apt-get install -y ocl-icd-libopencl1 nvidia-driver nvidia-cuda-toolkit
and rebooted.

The system crashed horribly. Stating: "Oh no! A problem has occurred and the system can't recover, etc etc."
I couldn't solve the problem but rebooting in recovery mode and removing nvidia drivers:
apt-get remove nividea* purge

And I'm back at the point before installing the cudas drivers.

Steps To Reproduce

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade -y
root@kali:~# lsmod |grep -i nouveau
no nouveau modules were running, so no black list were required.
update-initramfs -u && reboot
apt-get install -y ocl-icd-libopencl1 nvidia-driver nvidia-cuda-toolkit

//crashes after reboot//

Machine:

Laptop.

Acer Aspire E-15 E5-575g-53VG
intel i-5 7500u
nvidea Geforce 940MX
8GB SDRAM
255GB M.2 SSD.

This may well be fixed in the latest release but I have not tested.

I ran into issues with nvidia and kali and wrote the following guide that may help you if the upgrade is not successful.

Due to the age of the OS (Kali Moto [v1], Kali Safi [v2], Kali Rolling 2016.x/2017.1), these legacy versions are no longer supported.
