It will need to be run via sudo or as sudo/root from alt+f2

I think it was the card reader or the block size I used, try using bs=5M
I retried it with bs=1M and it worked

bs is just an argument telling dd how much to read/write before choosing the next amount, so that shouldn't have affected it, but glad you got it working in the end.
