Description

Booting a thumb drive with live kali-linux-2018.1 (either amd64 or i386)
will download updates on any computer connected to the Internet via Ethernet.

This can be verified by navigating to the /var/cache/apt/archives directory.

You will see it being populated with .deb package files.

amd64 downloads 361 files (598.0M)
i386 downloads 362 files (607.7M)

After the downloads complete, a notification at the top of the screen says: "Software Updates Available"

Clicking on view in that notification opens the software program and displays:

"OS Updates Includes performance, stability and security improvements"

And then displays a "Restart & Update" button

Of course this update will not work with thumb-drive-kali-live
running in RAM drive

Steps To Reproduce

Just boot a computer, that uses Ethernet to access the Internet,
using a thumb drive with Kali Live 2018.1

Navigate to /var/cache/apt/archives directory and watch it populate

Additional Information

On computers with limited memory, that's 600M of precious RAM drive
unnecessarily being used

Deleting the .deb package files does not work. They only download again.

A work around to this problem is to disconnect the Ethernet cable
before booting into Kali live. Then waiting a few minutes after gnome
appears before plugging the cable back in.

Due to the age of the OS (Kali Moto [v1], Kali Safi [v2], Kali Rolling 2016.x/2017.x/2018.1), these legacy versions are no longer supported.
