Summary | 0006176: Nmap 7.80 smb-os-discovery script is not current & throwing an error because of it.
Description | Running Nmap 7.80 shipped with Kali will return "smb-os-discovery: ERROR: Script execution failed (use -d to debug)" when trying to scan against SMB ports. This issue was reported to the nmap team Nov 2019: https://github.com/nmap/nmap/issues/1808 This was patched September of last year: https://github.com/nmap/nmap/issues/1808#issuecomment-550587010 The solution was found in that same thread via this comment: https://github.com/nmap/nmap/issues/1808#issuecomment-592906061 After replacing the smb.lua script in Kali with the patched one from the nmap repo, SMB discovery & enumeration now works.
Steps To Reproduce | Run a nmap scan that enables SMB enumeration & vuln detection scripts (e.g.: nmap -A -n -Pn -sV -vv <IP>) and look at the output of the NSE scripts results.
