Summary0006418: Kali Linux sometimes doesn't start in VMware ESXi with Kernel 5.6.0 anymore
Description

After upgrade to Kernel 5.6.7 (image 5.6.0) in VMWware ESXi 6.0 Kali does sometimes not start when power on. the virtual machine. The problem is not solved with kernel 5.6.14. It seems as it has definitely something to do with the kernel image, because with kernel 5.5.17 everything starts and works fine after upgrade all tools.

I have tested this with notebook as well and there all is fine after upgrade to kernel 5.6.7. So the problem only appears in VMWare.

Unfortunately no error message is reportet, just not loading OS.

Steps To Reproduce

Start machine in ESXi 6.0.0.

I have build up a test instance now to further document the error. The error appears even after a longer period of time only sometimes, not always. Sometimes the vm starts without any problems. Today I got the following message (see screenshot). But this message only appeared once, it is not really reproducable. Kernel Image is 5.6.14-Kali2.

Further information: I installed a bootlogd and configured it, to log boot messages. But no information is logged when the error appears, maybe because the start process does not proceed wide enough to load boot logging.

Today I got a different error message, when booting the vm after apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade, but problem is the same: the system hangs during boot. Does that help to find the error?

It seems as the problem has been solved in the new kernel release 5.7.6-1kali2, as I upgraded two virtual machines and tested the reboot several times, but the error didn't occur any more. I would say let's close the ticket for now.
