Could you provide some extra information?

did you upgrade recently ?
did you create a user other than root ?
did you check /etc/fstab and which drive partitions /uuid etc are mounting ?
do you have a vnc service or any other that forwards X ?

I'd reboot in recovery mode and load a previous kernel see what that gives - then check logs ,if you did a dist or full rolling upgrade .. maybe rm .Xauthority file , check locales xdg etc ,
