Did you check https://www.kali.org/docs/wsl/win-kex-sl/ ? If you do not accept "Public Networks" you will need to go into the Windows Firewall settings and make the change there.

try this command kex --win -s

@wrathofgod networkmanager isn't used (it's just installed and running) on WSL. The networking is all handled by WSL itself.

As for the username... it should show up as the first part of the prompt in a wsl instance - e.g. for me, the username is "steev" because that's what I chose when I set it up.
