Summary0007201: Ruby 3.0: when is Kali making the leap?
Description

Hi,

I manage ongoing Metasploit Framework development at Rapid7 and was curious if y'all have a date in mind for when Kali shifts to Ruby 3.0? We'd like to make sure Metasploit Framework is ready for that switch so that everything still works as-expected for MSF users in Kali.

Hi,

Kali depends on Debian Testing for the most common packages, including Ruby.
Currently Debian Testing is "freezed" to prepare the next Debian release. So no update to Ruby 3 can be done right now. It will be done after the Debian release (no date is set).
I think the Debian Release will happen in June 2021.

For ruby 3 I don't know when the update will be, it depends on the Debian ruby Team. As far as I know, nothing is planned for the moment. As soon as I have more precise information, I will give it to you.

FYI if metasploit is not totally ready for Ruby 3 when it arrives in Debian Testing, we can block for few weeks the new Ruby version so that the new version does not migrate in kali-rolling.

TYVM for your detailed response, @sbrun, very helpful! We'll continue to work on our shift to Ruby 3, would love to keep in contact on this to make sure it's a smooth path for Kali's Metasploit users.

The Debian Release will not be before July 31, 2021.

The switch to Ruby 3 may happen in August or later. I'm sorry for not being able to be more precise.
