I had this too after "apt full-upgrade" last week
You should do the following:

  • fc-cache -rfv
  • reboot your OS

Those steps fixed fonts on my laptop

This issue was probably caused by an update of the font Cantarell.
I had this too but after a reboot it was working great again without having to update the font cache.

The package is not provided from Kali but from Debian, and Upstream considers that the package should only be updated during reboot to avoid that kind of issues.
I'm closing this issue as it's unlikely to be fixed and just logging out and in again solves it
