Summary0008579: Error at boot with custom build
Description

Hi,

We humbly think it is not possible to build a custom-built image anymore.
We have three different custom builds and all fail with the same error: After the ISO is succesfully created the computer won't boot with the error in the image.
To be sure it is not because of our modifications or lack of knowledge, we've tried to build the standard image, and it does not boot either. We used the usual procedure here: https://www.kali.org/docs/development/live-build-a-custom-kali-iso/
Please see attached image of the exact error at boot
We've tried the iso image in physical and virtual hardware. Tried booting in UEFI and legacy mode
Tried diferent USB drives on the physical computers.
Our build system is a dedicated Kali VM

Can any PRO user try?

Thanks in advance

Do you try to build a installer image, or a live image?

I can reproduce after building a netinstall image

Sorry I did not explain myself correctly.
We create a live image. It is when we start installation to disk, with the option highlighted in the image below, that the error appears.
We do it that way because de --installer option at build does not allow us for a fully automated install with all modifications we need.
I've just tested again with the standard configuration without any modifications, and I can reproduce the behavior in my local Kali

Thanks!

I am also facing the same issue for a few days now using a custom implementation of the live build that is automated.
This happens regardless of BIOS or UEFI, bare metal or VM.

I had the same issue but fixed it by not using the netinstall image. If you got persistence on your USB, you can update via apt just fine.

I uploaded an updated version of the debian-installer, and it fixes the issue. The weekly image 2024-W02 is fixed, as far as I can see. Please try to rebuild your custom image, and it should be fixed for you as well.

Please confirm so I can close this issue. Again: thanks for reporting it!
