Summary0008854: Kali VMWare multi-monitor resizing bug
Description

Using the latest and upgraded Kali VMWare download with VMWare Workstation 17.5.2 , the desktop window does not resize properly when transitioning from full screen with two monitors.

Reproduction steps:

  • Download Kali VMWare image
  • sudo apt update / sudo apt upgrade all packages
  • reboot
  • Full screen the VM window
  • Extend the display to a second monitor
  • Exit full screen mode
  • Enter full screen the VM
  • See that the desktop is not sized properly and the mouse cursor location does not align. The second monitor can no longer be extended as well.

I believe i have narrowed this down to the package linux- packages (sudo apt install --only-upgrade linux) with a fresh kali vmware image.

Really a Kali issue or not just one of VMware?

Ive reproduced it across several different computers and different vmware hw compatibilities. When updating the packages, specifically the linux* packages, it breaks the usability of the VM in a multi monitor setup.

Yes, could be a lack of support from VMware for the newer Kernels (VMware is always "behind)

How did you have determined that this is a Kali issue?

It appears to be VMWare or the kernal, not kali apparently. I was able to reproduce with base debian and a linux mint image.
