Summary0009080: Unable to create Cisco Compatible VPN (vpnc) connection via Network Manager
Description

When trying to create a new Cisco Compatible VPN (vpnc) connection via Network Manager, there are no options presented on the VPN tab and the connection is also unable to be saved, rendering the ability to create a vpnc VPN connection via Network Manager unusable.

When running 'nm-connection-editor' as root via terminal, I get following two error messages:

  1. Could not load editor VPN plugin for “org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.vpnc” (cannot load factory nm_vpn_editor_factory_vpnc from plugin: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/NetworkManager/libnm-vpn-plugin-vpnc-editor.so: undefined symbol: nm_vpn_editor_factory_vpnc).

  2. gtk_widget_get_parent: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

Searching for similar issues reveals this has happened to users running Ubuntu and the general fix was to ensure that the 'network-manager-vpnc' and 'network-manager-vpnc-gnome' packages are installed. I have verified both packages are installed yet the issue persists.

I am experiencing this issue across both the pre-built VMware Kali image and the Kali AWS Cloud image, both running XFCE desktop (Kali GNU/Linux Rolling / 2024.4).

Network manager version info:
'network-manager' version: 1.50.1-1
'network-manager-vpnc' version: 1.4.0-1
'network-manager-gnome' version: 1.36.0-3+b1

After some additional testing it appears that this happens after running a dist-upgrade on the VMware image. I have not tested on the AWS cloud image. Doing additional testing on holding network-manager packages to isolate...

Looks the packages are coming from Debian so is there a need to report to Debian or GNOME/Network Manager devs?

Appears that holding back the network-manager-vpnc and network-manager-vpnc-gnome packages at least allowed the GUI to work. Will report this bug to network-manager devs.
