the name of the app is called "Software". from the main menu, long tapping on it and pressing "View Details" on it results in starting an app called "Software" which has a message that says "Sorry! There are no details for that application" with an x next to it that allows me to close the message early if i want. that message disappears automatically after about 5 seconds.

running top while the app called software is running lists an app called gnome-software. i think that may be its internal name.

i guess packagekitd is the service. when it runs, no other commands can fetch packages or update caches. You can mask the service and then try running software app. I suggest to use apt instead of any GUI app to install apps in phosh.

it seems you misunderstood my report. i was never trying to use software, the app which calls itself software. the issue is that it runs although i do not want it to. specifically, i believe i recall a setting that asked me if i wanted it to update automatically, or even check for updates automatically, and i chose no, however it seems that that switch is not working, and it is checking anyway.

the app seems kind of necessary, in concept, to be able to find apps that work on this phone. i know that in linux world you have to go on a long hunt across the wild savanna of the internet and rtfm before making a decision on which secret package name to whisper to the shell to install something, but thats awfully impractical. so i see how it serves a reasonable need. and i hate flatpak probably more than the next guy, but it (the app that decided to call itself software) just doesnt work.

actually, the name software is refreshing, but it needs to identify itself with a unique made by name.. who its made by. for example, i want an app on my phone called calculator, by gnome, not galculator.
