Summary0009856: Multiple applications segfault in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 on Kali 2026.3 VMware
Description

I am experiencing repeated segmentation faults in multiple applications on Kali Linux running inside VMware Workstation Pro.

Environment:

  • Kali Linux: 2026.3 (kali-rolling)
  • Kernel: 7.1.5+kali-amd64
  • Architecture: x86_64
  • VMware Workstation Pro: 17.6.4
  • VMware Build: 24832109
  • zsh: 5.9.2
  • GLIBC: 2.43-4

The problem initially appeared when launching terminal emulators. Both QTerminal and XFCE4 Terminal fail to start correctly and report an I/O error / segmentation fault.

The kernel logs show repeated segmentation faults in multiple unrelated applications, all occurring in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, for example:

qterminal: segfault at 8 ... in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
xfce4-terminal: segfault at 8 ... in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
xbrlapi: segfault at 8 ... in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
obexd: segfault at 8 ... in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

I also verified:

  • zsh --version works normally.
  • zsh -f starts successfully.
  • dpkg -V libc6 returns no output/errors.
  • ldd --version reports GLIBC 2.43-4.
  • The VM has 7.7 GiB RAM available to the guest, with no swap usage.
  • No MCE, hardware error, or memory error was reported by dmesg.

The crashes consistently occur at address 8 and appear to involve ld-linux-x86-64.so.2.

I would appreciate help determining whether this is a Kali package/system library issue, a VMware compatibility issue, or another underlying problem.
