Product Version | 2019.1
Fixed in Version | 2019.2
Summary | 0005422: Grub fails to install when chosing separate home partition
Description | While installing Kali (kali-linux-2019.1a-amd64.iso) using Graphical Install on a VirtualBox VM, chosing to install "Guided - use entire disk" and partitioning disk with separate /home partition, Grub fails to install. I tried repeating the task but it still fails. I have tried installing both in EFI and BIOS mode but both fail. If I install Kali with all files in one partition I have no issues and the installation completes successfully.
Steps To Reproduce | I have a video. I will attach it.

How big is the disk that you used for your VM? |
The disk is 32 GB. |
The logs. |
Thanks, the issue is that some partition is full (See "No space left in device" in the syslog file). Usually it's the / partition that is affected but here you have almost 10Gb for / apparently. Do you confirm that's the rough size that you got for / in the partitioning screen? Are you reusing existing partitions? Or are you installing supplementary packages? I'm trying to understand how you manage to fill up the 10Gb partition. |
I start off with a 30 GB dynamically allocated virtual hard drive (I used the same drive to test this same installation various times, I tried to reproduce the bug before reporting it, so initially the virtual HD was empty but in the following test installations it had the previous installation on it, but Kali re-partitioned and re-formatted it). I choose to let Kali partition the disk automatically with a separate /home partition. Doing this, Kali proposes: 0000001 primary 10.7 GB f ext4 / I accept what Kali proposes without changing anything. Then Kali starts installing the system (I can see "Copying data to disk..." under the progress bar of "Install the system" part of the installation (this part takes quite a lot of time) - I can also see "Running openssh-server..." , "Runnin ssl-cert...", "Running unhold...", ..., then "Updating the list of available packages..." and then it installs some other packages. To be honest I also do not understand how 10 GB of space get's filled up. After installing the system it configures the package manager, asks for a network mirror, I answer yes, I do not enter an http proxy, I can see Kali configuring apt, and then suddenly the "install the GRUB boot loader on hard disk" screen comes out with the "installation step failed" message (I have attached the screenshot when I first reported the bug). |
I executed a shell from the installer (I saved the VM state of the last test without shutting down the VM) and did a df -h, I am attaching a screenshot. |
I am reading the Kali manual and in chapter 4.1. Minimal Installation Requirements I read that ".. if you opt to |
We have updated partman-auto to require at least 12Gb for the root partition. This is fixed in weekly ISO and in will be fixed in the next release. |
