Product Version2019.1
Target VersionFixed in Version2019.2
Summary0005422: Grub fails to install when chosing separate home partition
DescriptionWhile installing Kali (kali-linux-2019.1a-amd64.iso) using Graphical Install on a VirtualBox VM, chosing to install "Guided - use entire disk" and partitioning disk with separate /home partition, Grub fails to install. I tried repeating the task but it still fails. I have tried installing both in EFI and BIOS mode but both fail. If I install Kali with all files in one partition I have no issues and the installation completes successfully.
Steps To ReproduceI have a video. I will attach it.

The video is too long to upload.
Steps to Reproduce:
Attach kali-linux-2019.1a-amd64.iso to CD of a Virtualbox VM and launch Kali installation.
When you get to the "Partition disks" section, select "Guided - use entire disk".
Select the VM virtual disk.
Next in "partitioning scheme" select "separate /home partition" and confirm what the installer proposes.
Carry on with the installation until it gets to the installing Grub boot loader on Hard Disk, it will fail. You can try to run this item again (the install Grub boot loader on a hard disk) it will fail.

How big is the disk that you used for your VM?
Can you attach the installer logs? see https://docs.kali.org/installation/troubleshooting-a-kali-linux-install

The disk is 32 GB.
I am attaching the logs.
When arriving to the partitioning section, during install, I selected "Guided - Use entire disk", then I selected the 32 GB HD, then "Spearate /home partition" and confirmed the partitioning scheme proposed by Kali.

Thanks, the issue is that some partition is full (See "No space left in device" in the syslog file). Usually it's the / partition that is affected but here you have almost 10Gb for / apparently. Do you confirm that's the rough size that you got for / in the partitioning screen?

Are you reusing existing partitions? Or are you installing supplementary packages?

I'm trying to understand how you manage to fill up the 10Gb partition.

I start off with a 30 GB dynamically allocated virtual hard drive (I used the same drive to test this same installation various times, I tried to reproduce the bug before reporting it, so initially the virtual HD was empty but in the following test installations it had the previous installation on it, but Kali re-partitioned and re-formatted it). I choose to let Kali partition the disk automatically with a separate /home partition. Doing this, Kali proposes:

0000001 primary 10.7 GB f ext4 /
0000005 logical 2.1 GB f swap swap
0000006 logical 19.4 GB f ext4 /home

I accept what Kali proposes without changing anything. Then Kali starts installing the system (I can see "Copying data to disk..." under the progress bar of "Install the system" part of the installation (this part takes quite a lot of time) - I can also see "Running openssh-server..." , "Runnin ssl-cert...", "Running unhold...", ..., then "Updating the list of available packages..." and then it installs some other packages. To be honest I also do not understand how 10 GB of space get's filled up. After installing the system it configures the package manager, asks for a network mirror, I answer yes, I do not enter an http proxy, I can see Kali configuring apt, and then suddenly the "install the GRUB boot loader on hard disk" screen comes out with the "installation step failed" message (I have attached the screenshot when I first reported the bug).

I executed a shell from the installer (I saved the VM state of the last test without shutting down the VM) and did a df -h, I am attaching a screenshot.

I am reading the Kali manual and in chapter 4.1. Minimal Installation Requirements I read that ".. if you opt to
install the default GNOME desktop and the kali-linux-full meta-package, you should really aim for at least 2048 MB of RAM and 20 GB of disk space...".
I am not an expert, so I may get it wrong, but on the VM I am installing on, the whole HD is 30 GB, but the root partition is 10 GB and the /home is 20 GB (more or less). Could it be that Kali installs completely on the root partition that has automatically been set to 10 GB by Kali installer? I was wondering if I have to fix this by hand or if the installer should know to reserve at least 20 GB to the root partition to be able to install Kali.

We have updated partman-auto to require at least 12Gb for the root partition. This is fixed in weekly ISO and in will be fixed in the next release.
