Summary0009058: Kali and KDE is broken from fresh installation
Description

I have attempted to install Kali several times on both VMware and VirtualBox. Both the 2024.4 and weekly ISO as well as attempted full install and only top 10. After a brand new installation and only choosing the KDE desktop environment Kali boots with several missing apps like Dolphin file explorer and all opened windows are broken. You cannot move, resize or close them.

Attempted to go via XFC and then switch DE but it is exactly the same. No file explorer as can be seen by the question mark where dolphin shortcut is and cant move or close any opened windows.

Maybe duplicate of 0008950?

I just tried to build a fresh Kali VM from kali-rolling, KDE works for me. Dolphin is installed, I can move windows, etc...

I've seen that @daniruiz landed some changes to the kali-desktop-kde metapackage just last week, I think it's fixed now.

Did you try to do a full upgrade of your system after installation (apt update && apt full-upgrade) ?

Alternatively, can you try the latest weekly image (version 2025-W02 that was built this week-end). You can get it from https://kali.download/base-images/kali-weekly/.

Thanks

That is very interesting. I tried it on VMware 17.6.2 and changed back to 17.50.0 and it was the same. I then tried VirtualBox and it was the same issue. I tried apt update && apt full-upgrade for all but made no change. I'm going to try the 2025-W02 this morning and see.
