Summary0009345: New kali-Live versions : Boot Fail
Description

Hi ...

The following tools were used to write the image to the USB drive:Rufus / Ventoy / UNetbootin / UltraISO

Graphics Cards Tested
GTX 2070 (with independent power supply)
GTX 750 (motherboard-powered graphics card, non-independent power supply type)
RX 580 (with independent power supply)

Test Results
It appears that starting from the 2025 version of Kali-Live, some users with older graphics cards (especially those using motherboard-powered graphics cards) are experiencing boot failures. This issue has been confirmed with the GTX 750 specifically.

This problem exists in the Kali-Live.iso image versions.I attempted to identify the exact Kali-Live version where this phenomenon first occurred.

Test Status Summary, Boot Result
All 2022 versions (2022kali-live.iso) Tested Successfully booted

2023kali-live.iso Not tested
2024kali-live.iso Not tested

All versions starting from 2025 (2025kali-live.iso) Tested Boot failed

However, with the following graphics cards, all versions can boot normally.
GTX 2070
RX 580

The issue is suspected to be related to the initrd.img .

Thanks for the report, but we don't have the time to deal with hardware support issues. Kali is based on Debian, so it's most likely an issue that is also present in Debian, and that's where it should be reported.

But you'd need to pinpoint the error first, find the logs, paste the logs, etc... Also it's nice to know that 2022 worked for you, and 2025 doesn't work anymore, but that leave us with a 2 years gap when something changed... That's a big window, a lot of things changed.

So, in short, there's nothing we can do.

I suggest you try some Debian live iso (eg. from Debian 13 Trixie that was released this summer), and if you can confirm that it doesn't work either, then you know that the bug report should go to Debian. But you need to provide more information, because nobody is going to magically find a laptop/workstation with you specific graphic cards and then spend hours or days trying to reproduce your problem... There are tons of vague hardware-related bugs posted on the Debian bug tracker, without any answer.

Good luck with troubleshooting this problem, and sorry to disappoint here.

Hi @arnaudr,
Sorry,Due to a boot failure, no boot logs were captured.

Tested graphics card: GTX 750 (powered by the motherboard, not independently powered).
Here are the final test results I obtained today: The boot was successful when testing the kali-linux-2024.2-live-amd64_.iso image. In other words, all Kali Linux live versions prior to 2024.2-kali-live.iso can boot successfully, while all live versions from 2024.3-kali-live.iso onwards fail to boot.
Test Summary
All live versions ranging from 2024.3-kali-live.iso to 2025.3-kali-live.iso failed to boot. ( Test graphics card: GTX 750 (powered by the motherboard, not independently power ).

Additionally, I tested all installer versions (kali-linux-installer-amd64.iso) spanning from 2017 to 2025.3, and all of them booted normally without issues.

I still have doubts about initrd.img and vmlinuz.
